The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.

This encompassed seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Background on Conviction

He was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the time, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
